A trip to remember
2004-08-24
A trip to remember
TWO years ago, I went to Qingdao with my family.
On the train there, we met a woman and her son from the city.
We talked happily with them, and they told us many things about Qingdao. "I'm sure you will love the city as much as we do," the little boy said, smiling.
Because of his words, I spent much of the trip dreaming about how beautiful Qingdao was going to be.
Just before we arrived, the boy and his mother asked us to go to their home for dinner. We said we'd love to, and gave them our telephone number.
Much beauty
The next morning, we went to Laoshan Mountain (崂山). It's 1,132 metres tall and really very beautiful. I was excited to see the waterfalls (瀑布), stones and trees there.
In the afternoon, we went to the Huanghai Sea (黄海). The sea was huge, and the waves were very high. We walked along the beach (海滩) and took photos.
Suddenly, my father's phone rang. It was the little boy! He asked us to go to his home for dinner. Father thanked him, but said we could not go. There was no bus back to the city that night.
The little boy was sad to hear that we could not come. His family were leaving Qingdao the next day to visit his grandmother. They would not be back until we had left.
"Remember to phone me if you ever come back!" he shouted.
One week later, we left Qingdao. I felt so sad because I didn't know when I would return.
I thought of the boy's words: "You will love the city." He was right. I do love Qingdao and its people. -

Buying the perfect shoes
Hey, this store's just opened. Let's see what they have.(这家店是新开业的,咱们进去看看都卖些什么?)
Let's go in here for a second, I need a new pair of shoes. These are made by my favourite designer. I just love Nike!(这是我最喜欢的设计师的作品,我特别喜欢Nike。)
What do you think of this? Should I buy it?(你感觉这双鞋怎么样,我该不该买?) I don't think that colour suits you.(我觉得这颜色不适合你。) Who'd be dumb enough to pay 500 yuan for a pair of shoes? Let's get out of here. There's nothing good here. I know a great store near here. I'll show you where it is.(我知道附近有一家很好的商场,我带你过去看看。)
Let's find somewhere to sit down. I'm exhausted! -
Leaving the past
2004-08-22
Leaving the past
IT was autumn again. The leaves had turned yellow and begun to fall. On a lovely autumn day, my friends and I went back to our old school.
Standing at the gate, I looked around the campus (校园). The school looked almost the same. The classrooms were still big and bright. The playground was still full of basketball players. Our old school had not changed much except for a new teaching building. Yet, deep in my heart, I knew something was different.
We decided to go and see our former (以前的) teacher, Ms Pu. We went to her office. Ms Pu was preparing (准备) for class. She was so happy to see us again. She had not changed and was just as cheerful (兴高采烈的) as before.
No longer the same
On our way to our old classroom, we met some of our former classmates. We went up to the group and tried to join in the talk. But I was sorry to find that we were no longer interested in the same things.
They were talking about a campus football match. We were more worried about the mid-term examination. During the talk, I realised we had all changed. We no longer had things in common. I remember when we were in the same class. We shared (分享) jokes and worried about school work. But those days had gone and would never return.
Before I walked out of the school gate, I stopped and looked around. The sun shone brightly over the school's orange trees. Suddenly I saw a big yellow orange among a lot of green ones. I knew it was getting ripe (成熟). Yes, change is not always bad. Sometimes it brings hope.
As I continued to walk down the street, I realised that everything changes. We lose something old, and we get something new. We should not feel sad that the past has gone forever but look forward to an exciting future. -
Let's get ready for basketball

Let's get ready for basketball
This is going to be a great match!"(这将是一场精彩的比赛)或"This game's a nail-biter(这将是一场紧张激烈的比赛)!"
Yao Ming is the best player ever(姚明是我所见到的最好的球员)!""Did you see Yao Ming's dunk(你看见姚明那个漂亮的扣篮了吗)?"
It's a sell-out tonight!(今晚票已卖光了)"
Man, the place is packed tonight(哥们儿,今晚可真挤呀)!"
“We made it to the finals(我们进了决赛)!” 但这对站在场外的你来说恐怕只能望“球”兴叹了:“I can't believe the referee missed that(我不信裁判没看到)!”
(It's going to go down to the wire)误判的哨声仍然频频响起,那可就真是让人急得跺脚了:“Oh, what a bad call(太糟了,又是误判)!”或者“We're not going to make the play-offs playing like this(我们可不想让决赛变成这个样子)。”) -

Late for school?
2004-08-20
Your words
Late for school?
Liu Xiaolu: The school's idea is a bad one. It may reduce (减少)the number of students who are late, but it won't solve the problem. The best way is to ask parents for help. Parents may give students awards (奖品)if they get to school on time. If the children arrive on time for a whole term, their parents could give them presents.
Zhang Fang: Fining (处以罚款)students is not a good idea. A better way is for students to bet (打赌)each other that he or she won't be late. Students who are late must buy a present for those who are not. Then, students who used to be late will try not to be late again.
Zhang Jingyi: Students who are late for school should put two or more alarm clocks in their bedrooms. Then, they can set them at different times. The alarms will keep ringing, and this will force them to get up.
Wu Liyun (teacher): I think it's unreasonable to fine or stop a student from coming to school because they are late for class. Perhaps schools should start classes later, or students should leave home earlier. Schools and the students should try to understand each other.
My plant has taught me a useful lesson

My plant has taught me a useful lesson
TWO months ago my mother bought me a cactus (仙人掌) for me. Each part of the plant was stretched (伸展) out and full of energy. Its body was covered with thorns (刺). In my eyes, it was giving a warning to people: don't touch me or I'll stab (刺伤)you hard!
In fact the cactus has won many people's hearts. I had always wanted this plant because it seems so brave. It is a great plant because it can live alone in the desert without drinking much water. The environment in the desert is very hard. There is always lots of wind and sand. The wind is so strong and the weather so dry that no human could live in such a place. Only a cactus can live there sucessfully.
My mother took care of the cactus. Nearly every day, I went and looked at it. But my mother was very careless. She watered it too often. One day, I went to look at the plant, and felt very sad: the cactus had died.
Jin Ming
For several years I had thought that the cactus was the greatest plant in the world. But mine died because my mother was careless! My cactus' death was so surprising and it made me think deeply.
Learning to care
Why did the cactus die? A simple answer is that a cactus cannot drink too much water. What we call "the water of life" killed one of the world's strongest plants. From my cactus, I have learned that every plant lives in a different way. We should learn the best way to take care of plants. If I had known that the cactus cannot drink too much water and my mother had watered it less, it would still be alive and healthy today.
I still think the cactus is great; it has taught me so many things.
